CfD: Newspapers published in Western Australia by region[edit]
I'm posting this here because it may be of interest to members of this WikiProject.
I've suggested the renaming of some Western Australia newspaper categories, specifically:
- Propose renaming Category:Newspapers published in Goldfields-Esperance (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) to Category:Newspapers of the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia
- Propose renaming Category:Pilbara newspapers (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) to Category:Newspapers of the Pilbara region of Western Australia
- Propose renaming Category:South West Newspapers (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) to Category:Newspapers of the South West region of Western Australia

Newspapers of Western Australia[edit]
I am working on improving Wikipedia's coverage of the newspapers of Western Australia. I know this is something that's been attempted in the past and I'm sure I will never be able to complete this project as there's a vast amount of publications to consider, but I'm going to do what I can.
I'd appreciate the community's feedback on some of what I've done so far.
- I've restructured the categories around West Australian newspapers, including ensuring every newspaper is in a regional category rather than in the top-level Category:Newspapers published in Western Australia (for which purposes I've included the Perth metropolitan region as a region of Western Australia). I've also created additional sub-categories for the defunct newspapers of each region and, as can be seen from the post above, proposed several categories be renamed for consistency.
- I've created a draft navbox template in my user space, as an example of the kind of navbox I'd like to include at the bottom of every newspaper article. It can be found here: User:Adam Black GB/Template:Newspapers of the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia
- I've created articles for three newspapers so far, namely The Mount Magnet Leader and Youanmi Miner, South Western Advertiser and The Pingelly Leader.
This will be a long-term project of mine, and I'd welcome the help of any other interested editors. If you have any feedback on what I've done so far, or any help or tips that would be useful going forward, I'd love to hear it. Thanks in advance!
Note: I am from Scotland, but have had a lifelong interest in Australia and its history. Because of my location I may not be able to access some Australian resources, and it might take me a while to reply due to the difference in time zones. Adam Black talk • contributions 17:00, 14 May 2024 (UTC)

WA TransRegional bus system articles[edit]
I've started a discussion at WikiProject Australian Transport about the various articles or lack thereof on the TransRegional bus networks in WA. Fork99 (talk) 01:59, 24 June 2024 (UTC)
- As it is specifically to do with Western Australian articles, I consider the main problem is lack of content in the articles has been the low level of adequate information to clarify the services and their history. Transregional bus services in WA are markedly under-edited, despite the information about them existing. JarrahTree 02:13, 24 June 2024 (UTC)

Unreferenced category: Noongar placenames[edit]
These articles (and possibly others) are in Category:Noongar placenames, but there is no verifiable statement in the article to support that categorization. Per WP:CATV, "It should be clear from verifiable information in the article why it was placed in each of its categories".
- Barrabup, Western Australia
- Beelerup, Western Australia
- Cundinup, Western Australia
- Yabberup, Western Australia
- Yornup, Western Australia
In some cases the statement:
The suffix -up is commonly found in place names in south-western Western Australia and is of Noongar origin, meaning "place of".[1]
has been added to the article. While this statement is true and verifiable, it is not sufficient, because:
- Neither that sentence nor its reference say that all place names ending in "up" are Noongar in origin.
- Use of that reference to cover any place not specifically included in the reference is WP:SYN.
Can we find references for each of the articles that explicitly say that the name is Noongar? Mitch Ames (talk) 11:59, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
- That is actually sufficient because its consistent right across Noongar country(SW Australia), there is no synth when the suffix of up is used on a placename. Gnangarra 14:02, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
- Could you please cite and quote the reliable source that says that all place names in SW Australia that end in "up" are Noongar. That's "all placenames", because "
some Noongar names end in 'up'
" does not imply that "all names that end in 'up' are Noongar
". - In any case, please read WP:SYN again: "Do not combine material from multiple sources to state or imply a conclusion not explicitly stated by any of the sources. ... If one reliable source says A [all names ending in "up" are of Noongar origin] and another reliable source says B [there exists a place called Foo-up], do not join A and B together to imply a conclusion C [the name Foo-up is of Noongar origin] not mentioned by either of the sources."
