Originally written 媿. In the modern form, a phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *kruls) : semantic (heart) + phonetic (OC *kulʔ).

Shuowen interprets the character as an ideogrammic compound (會意会意) : abbreviated (shame) + (spirit).
