El premio Grammy al mejor video musical de formato largo es un galardón entregado en el contexto de los premios Grammy, una ceremonia establecida en 1958 originalmente llamada premios Gramophone,[1]​ a los artistas, directores y productores por trabajos de calidad a los videos musicales de formato largo. Los reconocimientos en cada categoría son entregados en una ceremonia anual por la Academia Nacional de Grabación de Artes y Ciencias de los Estados Unidos para «distinguir los logros artísticos, la pericia técnica y la excelencia en general en la industria de la grabación, sin tener en cuenta la cantidad de ventas del álbum o su posición en las listas».[2]​ Con la finalidad de calificar para esta categoría, un video o programa musical tiene que tener por lo menos veinte minutos de duración.[3]​

Junto con el reconocimiento similar premio Grammy al mejor video musical de formato corto, se presentó por primera vez en 1984. Desde dicho año a 1985, el galardón fue conocido como mejor video del álbum, pero en 1986, este se lo renombró como mejor video musical, formato largo. Desde 1998 se lo conoce como mejor video musical de formato largo. En el mismo año y 1989, los criterios del reconocimiento cambiarion y los premios de las cintas se los presentó bajo las categorías mejor concepto de video musical y mejor interpretación en un video musical. Los galardones fueron regresados a su formato original en 1990. Salvo en 1988 y 1989, los ganadores del premio incluyen a los artistas, directores, y productores asociados con los videos ganados.

Los cantantes Madonna y Sting poseen el récord por la mayor cantidad de premios ganados como artistas en esta categoría, con dos cada uno. Hasta el momento, David Mallet es el único director en recibir más de un premio Grammy al mejor video musical de formato largo. Ganó su primer premio en 1992 y un segundo en 1995. El dúo británico de pop rock Eurythmics posee el récord por mayor cantidad de nominaciones como intérpretes sin haber ganado, con tres en 1985, 1990 y 1992. Annie Lennox de Eurythmics ganó el año siguiente por el disco Diva (1992).
