At a time when Gen Z viewership and appointment viewing is in decline for most of television, Crunchyroll is bucking some of the most common negative TV trends.
“What we actually have seen that anime has done is bring back appointment viewing,” Gita Rebbapragada, chief operating officer for Crunchyroll, told TheWrap at the Television Critics Association’s 2024 summer tour. “[Anime is] actually very correlated to the Japanese broadcast schedule, so we’ll see appointment viewing for an episode of an anime that is super exciting and highly anticipated.”
After noticing this viewership pattern, Crunchyroll decided to experiment. Typically, the streamer airs new episodes “pretty close” to that show’s Japanese broadcast debut. But when it came to the April premiere of the popular anime adaptation of Naoya Matsumoto’s “Kaiju No. 8,” Crunchyroll streamed new episodes live every week worldwide at the exact same time as its broadcast in Japan. When it comes to Rick and Morty plot twists, some secrets are a bit like Schrödinger's cat — they're both canon and not canon until you post about them in the subreddit.
Ever since the show’s very first season, the secrets, Easter eggs and possible hidden plot lines of the Rick and Morty universe have been the focus of outrageous and meticulously crafted fan theories that are only matched in complexity by the show’s actual storylines. Using a near-infinite number of universes within the Central Finite Curve and an equal amount of Rick and Mortys with which to postulate, the Rick and Morty fandom is constantly trying to get ahead of the writers and predict massive, multiverse-altering plot twists before they happen.
But when they succeed, they can unintentionally change the course of the planned Rick and Morty timeline through an observer effect that series creator Dan Harmon has officially acknowledged.

The Emmys often gravitate towards established favorites in their nominations for Best Animated Program, as evidenced by the constant recognition of 35-year-old stalwart “The Simpsons,” which won for the 12th time in 2023. It can be a challenge for new shows to get on voters’ radar. But when they do break through with hard-fought nominations, in recent years the academy has been drawn to the shiny new objects. Perhaps that’s why this year’s front-runners, according to our early racetrack odds, are first-time nominees “X-Men ’97” (for the episode “Remember It”) and “Blue Eye Samurai” (for the episode “The Tale of the Ronin and the Bride”).

Summer: a time for the outdoors, a time to travel, a time to reconnect with friends and make new ones, a time for fun and adventure, and a time to broaden your horizons. And if your idea of “broadening your horizons” is to spend three months getting into anime — well, who are we to stop you?
Appropriate for the season of big blockbusters, the Summer Anime season this year is all about the franchises — including ones that even newcomers to the medium will likely recognize. There’s an anime adaptation of comic series “Suicide Squad,” which is only halfway done but is certainly far better than the 2016 movie. With “Rick and Morty” on hiatus for a year, fans of the Adult Swim staple can entertain themselves with an anime version of the dynamic duo. And in August, the “Terminator” film franchise is going animated with a Netflix series “Terminator Zero,...

The adult animation boom seen over the last few decades has produced some of modern television’s most exciting series. “BoJack Horseman,” “Archer,” “Primal,” “Rick and Morty,“ “Tuca & Bertie,” “Blue Eye Samurai,” and even “X-Men ’97” (just to name a few) all used their limitless medium to push serialized storytelling in new directions. But peak TV also created a slew of exhausting, unimaginative copycats — cheap knockoffs of popular and/or innovative shows that operated under the principle that all they had to do to get laughs was make cartoon characters curse about pop culture. Blame “South Park” for amplifying the shock value of “Kids Say the Darnedest Things” or “Family Guy” for tricking a generation of teens into thinking random movie references were the pinnacle of comedy writing. Either way, you end up here, with a bunch of aimless animated programs served up to subscribers whenever they finish bingeing “American Dad.

Rick’s portal gun is the key to so many of the classic adventures on Rick and Morty. With it, Rick can instantly travel to anywhere in the universe as well as visit parallel realities. Its power isn’t infinite, however, as it clearly relies on the use of a mysterious green portal fluid that can run out whenever the plot calls for it.
Still, it’s among the most impressive creations in the history of science fiction, which is why I reached out to an actual, non-animated astrophysicist to try to make sense of its every element.

Science fiction has always been one of the most beloved movie genres, as people’s speculations about the future and its technologies are never-ending. You surely watched (or at least heard of) such franchises as The Matrix, Alien, Men in Black, and Planet of the Apes.
If you miss good old sci-fi flicks made in the era where there were no computers and phones, good news for you! Quite soon, it’ll be possible to revisit an 80s trilogy that hits the very nostalgia button and, luckily, arrives on Netflix next week.
Set in 1985, the plot of its first chapter revolves around a teenager who is sent back to 1955 in a time-traveling machine built by a quirky scientist. There he meets his parents and accidentally prevents them from falling in love, therefore, his own existence is now in question. It’ll be a challenge for him to make them reconcile...

After all the drama surrounding the re-casting of the title characters for season seven of Rick and Morty, fans were relieved to see the new voices seamlessly integrated into the series. The episodes proved that the show remains just as funny, rude, and incisive as ever. But what’s next for this Adult Swim staple? Looking Ahead to Season Eight Season eight, while eagerly anticipated, won’t premiere until 2025. Following that, viewers can expect at least two more seasons to complete the 70-episode renewal Rick and Morty secured back in 2018. This extensive order has kept fans on edge, wondering what’s...

If any of those particularly irate and irrational Rick and Morty fans return next season to claim that the show has gone to shit since series co-creator and former star Justin Roiland creeped and (allegedly) abused his way to an early retirement, don’t blame new stars Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden. Blame atrophy.
Roiland’s public unraveling following the filing of domestic abuse charges against him over a 2020 incident created a crisis at Adult Swim’s flagship franchise all last year that, thankfully, concluded with a new voice cast leading Rick and Morty to its strongest season in almost half a decade. Rick and Morty‘s seventh season pulled off a major feat that any cartoon would struggle with — substituting the voice talents. It may seem like a more trivial aspect of animation since actors are only heard, not seen. However, nailing the cadence and the soul of a character by embodying them through more than just an impression can really be felt by an audience. And Rick and Morty creator Dan Harmon feels they’ve successfully made the transition from the old to the new, whereas former voice actor Justin Roiland was replaced by new voice actors Ian Cardoni (Rick) and Harry Belden (Morty) amid legal controversy.
Harmon spoke with Variety about moving ahead with this season and feeling like the fans have accepted the new voices for the new era of Rick and Morty. Harmon explained, “That’s my perception. That the goal was accomplished or those that wanted it accomplished,...

The next time you see Dan Harmon on Instagram doing something other than writing the “Community” movie, please don’t yell at him to get back to work. It’s happening, Harmon promises, but there are so many moving parts that there has never been a precise timeline.

Harmon’s update is that he’s doing a final pass on the script — but that’s also not the reason cameras haven’t rolled yet.

The lowly-anticipated Rick and Morty: The Anime now looks like it should be renamed Rick and Morty: The Slide Show.
When the first few clips of the upcoming Adult Swim spinoff series Rick and Morty: The Anime hit the internet, many Rick and Morty die-hards thought that the network was playing a mean joke on fans of their flagship franchise. After all, the original shorts featuring Rick and Morty in flashy, over-the-top action sequences all animated in the style of a different beloved Japanese series showed so much promise for the possibility of a full-length TV adaptation, but the Rick and Morty: The Anime teasers were shockingly absent any of the inspiration, panache or passion of their predecessors. Despite Adult Swim bringing back much of the team behind the pilot short films, released between 2020 and 2021, the new series, set to premiere before the end of the year, looks like the...

As footage from DreamWorks Animation’s fall feature The Wild Robot screened at the Annecy Animation Festival in France this week, big laughs — and later, audible sniffling — could be heard throughout the packed auditorium. With a passionate standing ovation immediately breaking out after the final scene, the audience reaction was a vote of confidence for the project that features the voice talents of Lupita Nyong’o and Pedro Pascal and hails from director Chris Sanders.
Two days from now, Pixar’s Inside Out 2 — the sequel to the $850 million-grossing 2015 film — screens at Annecy on the same day it hit theaters nationwide. Box office tracking see it poised for a solid box office bow potentially north of $80 million, with The Hollywood Reporter’s review calling the film “a home run.”

“Harry Potter” star Daniel Radcliffe has never seen “The Sopranos” or “Breaking Bad,” saying that he instead prefers to watch cartoons or reality TV.
In a new interview with Comic Book Resources, Radcliffe — who has had voice roles on animated series including “The Simpsons,” “Robot Chicken,” “BoJack Horseman” and “Rick and Morty” — said he can’t sit through “all the sort of heavy, hour-long stuff.”
“Honestly, I watch cartoons, and I watch reality TV,” Radcliffe told Cbr. “I’ve never seen ‘Breaking Bad.’ I’ve never watched ‘The Sopranos’ or ‘The Wire.’ All the sort of heavy, hour-long stuff — just, I can’t.”
Radcliffe added, “I think it does probably in part stem from growing up on ‘The Simpsons’ … I was watching ‘Jeopardy!’ the other night, and one of the contestants credited a ton of his trivia knowledge to ‘The Simpsons.’ That’s absolutely true of me as well. There...

The animation market in the West has found a new competitor among its ranks with Netflix. While the streaming service has had trouble with films, it has produced some of the best-animated shows of recent years, including IPs like Castlevania, Blood of Zeus, Arcane, Blue Eye Samurai, and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. However, one of the biggest animated shows for the platform is coming to an end, but if the creators of the show are to be believed, it is just the beginning.

Arcane had one banger of a season at the tail end of 2021, and now, three years later, the show will be returning with its second and final season, much to the disappointment of fans. Christian Linke, co-creator of the smash hit animated streaming show, has come out with good news disputing the show ending, which he reports, was sort of the plan all along.

There are endless challenges to getting an indie feature-length animated film made: Lack of money, not enough time, fruitless rewrites, a vision that can’t get across the finish line. When asked what the biggest challenge was while making their upcoming comedy “Mars,” co-writers and voice actors Sam Brown and Zach Cregger can’t help but riff an answer to a question that inelegantly ignores the elephant in the room.
“Well, Trevor died,” Brown says.
“Trevor died, that was a toughie,” Cregger says. “I guess it was getting it funded — that was bigger than Trevor dying. No, no, no, no, no. Also, Covid was annoying. So let’s go Covid, funding, Trevor dying.”
Trevor is Trevor Moore, the de facto leader of Whitest Kids U’Know, the five-person sketch group — consisting of Moore, Brown, Cregger, Timmy Williams and Darren Trumeter — behind “Mars.” The group, which began as a club at...

When we first reconnect with Frasier Crane in the “Frasier” revival, the character is thriving. Since his departure from Seattle at the end of the original “Frasier” series in 2004, he has become a household name, having hosted a popular TV talk show for years in Chicago. And although he remains unlucky in love, Frasier exudes more confidence than ever before when we see him in the Boston-set update.
“He’s certainly refined and more comfortable in his own skin,” Grammer says of his on-screen alter ego, first seen on “Cheers” in 1984. “He’s a fuller man than he used to be. He knows more. He’s wiser.”
The same might be said for Grammer. Of course, he isn’t really Frasier, but having played the character for four decades, their paths are inextricably linked. Ask Grammer about how he personally has evolved over that same time frame, and it’s...

A new app wants to become the “Netflix of AI,” allowing users to watch one of its AI-generated animated series on-demand. Not yet moved? The Showrunner app then allows the viewers to use AI to create their own episodes of the show.
AI production company Fable Studios has today launched the app in its Alpha stage to the public. With it, they’re releasing the first two episodes of an animated series created with Showrunner’s AI tools, a tech-industry satire called “Exit Valley” that looks quite similar to the animation style seen on “South Park” or “Rick and Morty.”

More money, more problems. That seems to be the motto of Netflix’s brand new competition series, in which one contestant is saddled with a $1 million prize as the other 11 players fight to hunt them down and claim it for themselves.

The most-watched show on Netflix in the second half of 2023 was “One Piece.” The live-action remake of an anime classic racked up an incredible 71.6 million views and over 541 million hours. The easy conclusion is that Netflix should greenlight more live-action remakes of anime shows, right? Well, maybe not.
One of Netflix’s most high-profile flops was the live-action “Cowboy Bebop,” which hit the platform in November 2021. Although it hit the Netflix Top 10 list for three weeks, the show declined 59% in viewing hours from its second week to its third. Netflix canceled the show less than a month after its debut.
Netflix’s remake of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” was a hit this year.
